The Abandoned Asylum

Here are some interesting scenes I photographed at an abandoned sanitarium. From its stark white-walled structures, its cafeteria full of old electronics, a rusted old heating plant, and countless smashed windows, it was a haunting place to visit.

Ice crystals on the ground near the sanitarium.

A large chunk of ice "growing from" a stone wall.

Small pieces of ice reflecting sky and trees, as well as a "pencil" of ice containing plant buds and stems.

This and the next two photos show large amounts of ice "flowing" very slowly through the brick wall inside a railroad tunnel.

Outside the sanitarium's heating plant.

Ceiling inside the heating plant just outside the bathroom, with lots of peeling paint.

An open, smashed window in the heating plant.

Hot water valves near the boilers.

Oil Gauges

Large vent on one side of the boilers (about three feet in diameter)

This and the next four shots are of various rusty pipes and fittings in the heating plant.

A broken gauge.

Closeup of a hot water/steam valve

Hearth door into which the operators shoveled coal.

Smashed safety glass window

An old T-Bird in the sanitarium's vehicle maintenance shop.

Backup generator engine.

"Vegetable Room" gauge in the main kitchen area.

Handle on a huge wooden door to "The Vegetable Room."

Door leading into the first floor of the sanitarium.

Another backup generator engine (this one was much larger than the previous one pictured on this page).

View of one wing of the sanitarium.

A wrecked Underwood typewriter.

A very thoroughly "shot" window!

Smashed round window near the roof.

Side view of one the sanitarium wings.

Inside the administrative building.

Rusty fire escapes.

Old sink fixtures.

A very blue stucco wall.

Old transformer with large cooling fins.

Hardened tar "puddles"

Old window with weeds.

Small abandoned house on the sanitarium grounds.

Weeds overgrowing a fallen tree.

Fallen electrical cable, stripped of insulation.

Water flowing from an ingress in a railroad tunnel, on the walk home from the sanitarium.

Large wall of icicles just outside the tunnel.
