These are pictures taken during our 2006 trip to Canyon de Chelly in Arizona.

Here we are at the Massacre Cave Overlook, with 500 foot tall sandstone cliffs just three feet away
from where I'm standing.
(f/7.1, 45mm, 1/200s)

A view over the edge at the same overlook. I found that I was less afraid of the heights when I hiked
along the edges without railings, for some reason.
(f/6.3, 17mm, 1/160s)

A view of the same cliff as two pictures ago, further south along the canyon rim.
(f/8, 17mm, 1/250s)

Note the striations and caves in the canyon's rock walls, hundreds of feet below. The most striking feature,
for me, of Canyon de Chelles, was how I felt "immersed" in the canyon, with the opposite walls of the canyon
being fairly close, unlike when I stood on the north rim of the Grand Canyon and the opposite side was lost
in haze, many miles away. Here, the rocks surrounded you with their size, solidity, and color.
(f/6.3, 50mm, 1/160s)

A view south, further along the canyon, showing a series of tall cliffs.
(f/5.6, 17mm, 1/125s)

A view over one edge of the overlook wall seen in the previous photo. Kathleen is taking a picture of
some ancient Anasazi indian ruins visible from her position.
(f/7.1, 17mm, 1/200s)

Here's the cave Kathleen was viewing in the previous photo, showing some Anasazi relics inside the cave entrance.
(f/7.1, 50mm, 1/200s)

A view along one of the canyon walls.
(f/8, 50mm, 1/250s)

Here's a starkly colorful interface between two tall cliffs -- one with pale gray rock, the other a deep shade of red.
The sections of cliffs visible in this photo are a couple hundred feet tall.
(f/9, 50mm, 1/320s)

A small cedar tree near the canyon rim. I consider this to be one of the best pictures I've ever taken. Look at the
depth of color in that sky! Up here, at this altitude, on such a dry summer day, the sun's rays were extremely dangerous,
so we were sure to wear hats and lots of sunscreen. The Navajo people, selling their jewelry at a few locations
along the canyon rim, typically sat under umbrellas to protect themselves from the intense sunlight.
(f/6.3, 17mm, 1/160s)

At the edge of a very tall cliff, looking to the opposite side of the canyon.
(f/6.3, 38mm, 1/160s)

Note the Anasazi cliff dwellings beneath the huge red overhanging cliff.
(f/5.6, 17mm, 1/125s)

A closeup of the cliff dwelling.
(f/13, 40mm, 1/30s)

Kathleen and I, with me holding the camera.
(f/6.3, 17mm, 1/160s)

Distant cliffs, as we left the Massacre Cave Overlook and headed for the Mummy Cave Overlook.
(f/5.3, 210mm, 1/800s)

Canyon cliff walls at Mummy Cave Overlook. Note the gigantic section of toppled canyon wall. That must have made
one loud thud when it fell...
(f/6.3, 27mm, 1/160s)

Gorgeously colored cliff walls.
(f/6.3, 22mm, 1/160s)

Another view, further south through the canyon from Mummy Cave Overlook.
(f/6.3, 27mm, 1/160s)

A closeup of the cliff walls.
(f/8, 34mm, 1/250s)

Looking toward a cliff edge, with several beautiful plants growing near the edge.
(f/16, 22mm, 1/50s)

A stone stairway leading down to an overlook.
(f/6.3, 17mm, 1/160s)

A cool pile of rocks and ledges.
(f/7.1, 17mm, 1/160s)

A closeup of a nearby cliff wall, showing the interesting texture of the rock, as well as a small cave opening.
(f/7.1, 17mm, 1/200s)

Looking down a 40 or 50 foot drop near one of the cliffs.
(f/16, 17mm, 1/50s)

A view down a narrow canyon within the larger canyon.
(f/7.1, 17mm, 1/200s)

Another picture of the reddish cliff walls.
(f/7.1, 17mm, 1/200s)

From Antelope House Overlook, one could see the remains of another Anasazi cliff dwelling.
(f/6.3, 50mm, 1/160s)

One cliff above/behind another cliff.
(f/6.3, 17mm, 1/160s)

Steps and a wall at the Antelope House Overlook.
(f/8, 34mm, 1/250s)

More interesting rocks near the canyon rim.
(f/6.3, 50mm, 1/160s)

A cedar tree on the outskirts of the town of Chinle, at the Visitor's Center for Canyon de Chelly.
(f/5.6, 17mm, 1/250s)

A picture of a Hogan, a traditionally styled Navajo house.
(f/7.1, 24mm, 1/200s)
