Disconnected

I called this morning
and heard the final message --
a cold, female voice announcing
your number's out of service.

I was glad you stayed in town,
a short drive, now and then,
for a friendship that outlived
the court's decree.

Now that you've moved back home
with Mom, Dad, your sister,
I suspect I'll wake up
late one night
and call you on the phone,
just to make sure
we weren't a dream.
